I've been working on my little reading/sitting area for the least amount of money possible. I always like to set a budget no matter the project. Its more of a challenge and gives me freedom to spend that money. I cannot preach this enough! I don't even take on design jobs or weddings anymore without the client giving me a ballpark budget. There is wisdom and freedom in setting financial boundaries or guidelines when tackling a certain area of your home. There is also safety and conscious thought instead of impulse buys.
Designers love to add a cozy lounge area to every corner we can when the project allows. We just can't help ourselves. Here are three simple tips to help you create one in your own home.
no. 1 --- START WITH YOUR SEATING.
Whether you want a chaise lounge, oversized chair with ottoman or a "non-hidous" recliner, this will be your biggest ticket item and literally your biggest item. So you are wanting to use it as your anchoring piece. Find a style and color you love that can grow with you, your family, or your lifestyle.
I love the way Park and Oak Design used three chaises in a row to create this lounge-y area in their farmhouse project.
A little more on the traditional side but beautiful, so if you are working with an existing piece of furniture you can still make it work with the next two tips.
no. 2 --- ADD A SIDE TABLE
A side table makes these areas functional and help you layer. And layering is a jey part of good styling and vingettes. You'll want somewhere to add personal touches like florals, picture frames, books and glasses.
This area created by Amber Interiors is white but serene and the rustic side table adds warmth and contrast. She is the queen of chaise lounge reading nooks. Like, for real. I'm pretty sure she adds them to every project and I am not mad about it at all!
no. 3--- ADD LIGHTING
You'll need some kind of task lighting. That can be a table lamp on a side table or my personal preference which is a floor lamp that is adjustable. I love to read/work in the early mornings before the sun even gets up so I personally need the light.
Marie Flannigan does timeless so well. I love her use of layering with the chaise, table and lamp.
This moody corner with all its texture, fabrics, and wood accents makes me so happy. I could die happy here facing the windows and view.
I've put together two looks with two different budgets.
Look No. 1
I love this one. I could see this in a sitting room, a bedroom corner or even an office! The dark wood tones are classy and the contrasting dark chaise draws your eye in and says "lets relax and read".
Chaise || Side Table || Lamp || Art Print || Frame || Decor Beads || Faux Eucalyptus
Look No. 2
I named this board style mixer because it is a compilation of every style really. And I am here for all of it!
Chaise || Lamp || Art Print || Frame || Side Table || Green Pillow || Linen Lumbar
So my questions for you are...
Do you already have a comfortable reading corner where you like to veg out or even work? If so, where?
And which design do you like best?
