budget bathroom refresh {before & after}

Why do I complicate things? Well, for y'all if I am being honest. Haha. I have to take before pictures, after pictures, during pictures and source everything. So this post that was suppose to be on Monday...is now a Wednesday evening with my sick-self getting behind on this post. So a space that literally took me less than an hour to "put together" or "install" has taken me days to document.

So here are the before pictures. We have had the bathroom like this for over 8 months. I know..I know..it looks like we just moved in. NOtice the stickers on the toilet from my daughter, the jar with no lid, the dollar store curtain rings and I think I counted 3 empty bottles os soap in the shower.

That towel ring has never had a towel on it. Haha. We just used our regular towels. Also...please notice the shelf in my room that is ridiculously cluttered. Project to come.

And there I am. In all my paint clothing glory. I literally chugged some day-Quil after taking this photo cause I felt like I was dying. Haha.

My husband came home and commented on the bathroom and how much he liked it. Specifically, that I adhered to his request for easy access flossers and Q-tips. I kid you not. He goes through at least 4 of each a day. Haha. Probably why the stupid human doesn't ever have cavities! Who else had their teeth (along with other things) destroyed from pregnancy?! (Insert two hands waaaay up)

Do you remember back when I ordered this rug on Black Friday and it didn't fit my entry? Well...it turns out that it fits my bathroom perfectly and so I decided to use that as my base. Now before I get some haters out there commenting on how it is not a bathroom rug, its not washable, and its not good for water...listen up.

This rug is soooo soft. It acts just as good as other bathroom rugs I have had and a little fun fact for you....Ryan and I DESPISE memory foam or really thick bathroom rugs. Do they EVER dry out before the next shower? I mean really?! I feel gross setting my feet on a really thick bathroom mats. We prefer lower pile carpets than super shaggy anything. It is also a bathroom attached to our bedroom so the kids don't pee all over the rug and it is just us using this space. I will probably just disinfect weekly, vacuum and carpet clean it every once in a while. So it works for us. All those bathrooms you see with vintage kilim runners on Instagram and Pinterest I am 100% sure are not "machine washable" rugs. So we are good. It has been done many times before. (insert thumbs up)

Some might say..."the runner is too wide". I chose this rug because ONE: I was literally trying to use as much as I already had on-hand and chopping my home and TWO: I don't love the linoleum floor that is our bathroom. So it covers up more of it.

Sometimes the rules we "think are rules" for a given room are complete nonsense and we just need to throw them out and do what we love and is sustainable for our situation.

So like I said the rug was my jump off point and everything unfolded from there. The ceramic wall plates I mentioned a few weeks ago that I picked them up at the thrift store go so well with it and add interest on the wall.

I take A-LOT of baths you guys. I'm almost embarrassed to tell you how many a week. It is how I destress. So having easy access to my bath salts and bombs is a must. This jar was perfect to place on the back of the toilet so that I can use it on the daily.

I changed out my curtain rings to these from Target. I don't LOVE most curtain rings especially ones that don't fully close around the rod. Those kind just pop off and get caught and are so frustrating. These are my go-to affordable shower curtain rings and I have them in my kids bathroom too. Unfortunately I just found out they are discontinuing them so they might be in your clearance area at your local store. I also chose a simple white waffled shower curtain to use that I have had for almost 5 years now and I love it.

The styling in this space had to be 100% functional, with the exception of the vase of ferns. We only have two little drawers to store our stuff in for daily items so I had to figure out ways to keep things on the counter without cluttering it.

Ya....I didn't feel like cropping myself out of that photo so there you go. Haha! By the way... this room was a B-word to photograph. The lighting is not the best and it is a 5x12 bathroom. So not much space to move around.

The woven tray I scored for $1 at the thrift store. The jars that hold my cotton balls and flossers are actually candle jars that I got 60% off at Joanne's . I think I got both of them for under $6. I looked around for apothecary jars and they were 3x the price so this was a good alternative for the same look. I already had this vase from Target a few seasons ago but I think it is discontinued now.

I have q-tips, my coconut oil moisturizer and makeup in these on the other side of the vanity. The coconut oil jar is from IKEA and came in a pack of three. I have the other two in my kitchen and I love them. The woven basket with lid I thrifted for $1 and keeps all my daily make-up contained, for easy access and to keep my husband from going insane. Haha. Here is the Hand Towel I picked out. It is actually a kitchen towel but works just as good.

This glass amber bottle is from Target and it kinda tied in all the darker colors I had going on on the floor and cabinetry.

I really am happy with how it turned out. To be honest I am such a messy bathroom person so I am hoping to keep this more organized now that it looks a lot better and feels more like me.

TAKE AWAYS:

1 || Throw out the rules and do you. This rug was a perfect fit although some might not like the style, size and material I could honestly not be happier about the runner in here.

2 || AGAIN...Shop your house. You may think I have a whole room filed with goodies but I really don't. I have decent pieces I can pull from and try to use what I have on-hand. I bought some things but they were inexpensive and funtional so to me they were worth the investment.

3 || Thrift and look for deals. Most of this bathroom was from pieces collected or things I got on REALLY good deals. And to me it makes it more exciting to know I didn't spend a fortune to make even our "builder grade rental" bathroom a little more put together. If you take away the rug, which I consider not really an expense for this space I did all of this for under $43.

4 || Builder grade or rentals. You don't have to have a $30,000 dollar custom bathroom to make it look nice. Look for small simple and affordable ways to make your home beautiful and unique to you.

As always...I hope this before and after inspires you to look for small projects and ways to make your house a little more of a place where you love to be and live.
